Riruako Sworn in As Nudo MP

ADY Riruako (71) was on Tuesday sworn in by Chief Justice Peter Shivute as Nudo’s member of parliament, replacing the late Chief Kuaima Riruako.

A number of Nudo officials were in the National Assembly to witness the ceremony.

This comes after the death of Chief Riruako, who was the party’s president and member of parliament, on 2 June which left the seat vacant. Chief Riruako was buried last month at the OvaHerero heroes and heroines cemetery in Okahandja.

The Nudo national executive met about two weeks ago and chose Asser Mbai to succeed Chief Riruako as the president. Mbai had been Nudo’s vice president until then. Councillor Benestus Kandundu took over from Mbai as the party’s vice-president.

Speaking to The Namibian yesterday, Mbai said he was not surprised that he was appointed president of the party because he had served as the vice president before. “I was groomed for this position. I am able to shoulder the responsibility that comes with it. I will take this position seriously. I know that I am ready for it,” he said.

He also said the decision to elevate him was unanimous as all members had one vision, and that is to follow in the footsteps of the late Riruako and ensure his legacy lives on.
