Skorpion Zinc Cup Draw On Thursday

The Namibia Football Association will host the draw for the Skorpion Zinc Under 17 Cup on Thursday.

The event, which doubles as the launch of this year’s edition, will be held at the NFA Soccer House in Katutura, Windhoek.

According to the NFA’s head of competitions, Titus Kunamuene, the tournament is for players born on or after 1 January 1998.

Each participating region is expected to submit a provisional list of 30 players to the organising committee by 4 August 2014, with the final 20-player list expected to be complete before 14 August.

“The second edition of the Cup will be held from Friday 22 August to Tuesday 26 August 2014 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Katutura. We will still have thirteen football regions for now and not two teams from Kavango as we still have to address the issue of that region being divided into two political regions. For now we have just one football region over there,” explains Kunamuene.

The competition began last year after the NFA and mining company Skorpion Zinc agreed to a sponsorship deal worth N$1,3 million over a period of three years.

Khomas are the reigning champions following their 2-1 success over Erongo in the final of the inaugural event in Keetmanshoop.

Dino Roman Engelbrecht and Jandjamuje Maharero scored for Khomas and Amaru van Neel was on target for Erongo during the memorable final match.

Oshikoto region finished third by overcoming Oshana region 2-1.

Otjozondjupa region won the fair play award, while the Moment of Brilliance award went to Pandeni Kandjabanga of Oshana region.

Oshikoto striker Josef Utoni scored 11 goals in six games to win the Golden Shoe award, while Khomas’ Jandjamuje Maharero was voted the Player of the Tournament and Khomas’ Benni Ochurub was voted Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
