SKW 1 and Cohen 3 Retain Top Spots

DEFENDING champions, SKW 1 and Cohen FC 3 retained their top spots in the National A and B Leagues respectively following superb performances in the second round of matches of the Bank Windhoek National Fistball Championships which took place at the SKW Sport Fields last Saturday.

Title contenders, SKW 1, who were led by former national team coach, Stefan Groumlli, had a tough day on Saturday as they had a close encounter with third placed, SKW 2. SKW 2, with the inspirational Christoph Kubirske in attack, took a quick 2-0 lead before SKW 1 managed to find their feet in the game. Thanks to the vast experience of the team, they managed to win four sets in succession to win the match 4-2.

Second-placed Cohen FC 1 could have overtaken SKW 1 at the top of the log, but they failed to win their match against SKW 2. The game was a close affair, with SKW 2 winning 4-3 by the narrowest of margins. The Swakopmund team, SFC 1, remain fourth on the log after winning comfortably against the bottom-placed team Cohen FC 2.

The Bank Windhoek National B League remains firmly in the hands of the defending champions Cohen FC 3, who are still unbeaten this year. They continued their good form on Saturday by taking two wins from two matches. This took them five points clear of their nearest rivals, DTS, who are in second place.

DTS are level on points with SFC 2 but have a better points difference. They also managed an important confidence boosting 4-1 against the Swakopmund team which bodes well for the rest of their league campaign. Although his team was not successful, U18 player, Rico Stuumlhrenberg of SFC 2 was awarded the DANRIC Auto player of the day trophy for his outstanding performance in defence. SKW 3 are in fourth place with Cohen FC 4 in last place of the log standing with only one point from their six matches to date.

The next league meeting is scheduled for 7 June 2014. During the two-month break from league action, the annual Coastal Indoor Fistball Tournament will be played in Swakopmund on 10 May, while the U18 national team will shortly travel to Brazil. The team, led by coach Andreas Minz, will depart on Saturday, 12 April from the Hosea Kutako International Airport to take part in the U18 World Championships.
