SKW Off to g Start

SKW’s tennis team fielding national junior tennis players Cody van Schalkwyk, Oliver Diggle, Luke Smayes and Nguvi Hinda was the most impressive winner in the National Tennis Association (NTA) Men’s Interclub tennis competition that started on Saturday, 20th of September.

The competition is played in a league-format and features mainly the city’s second league players. The participating clubs are SKW, Nampol, Unam and the Central Tennis Club. With four teams CTC entered the most numbers of teams.

The matches are played on Saturday weekends until the 22nd of November, 2014.

SKW crushed CTC A by 20 points to zero. Top Namibian junior player Codie van Schalkwyk beat Eno Akpabio 6-2 6-3 while Oliver Diggle defeated NTA – FNB development player Risto Shikongo who retired when down 4-0.

The route was complete when SKW’s doubles team of Codie van Schalkwyk and Oliver Diggle beat CTC A’s Braam van Greunen and Patrick Paulus 6-1, 6-0 and the second SKW junior team of Luke Smayes and Nguvi Hinda beat Eno Akpabibo and Risto Shikongo 7-6, 6-2.

The other matches were played at the CTC Tennis Park in Olympia. A small, but enthusiastic group of spectators cheered their favourite teams and pushed the players to excellent performances. Despite the loud support from friends and fellow students, the Unam team lost against the more seasoned team of CTC-OTB 14-6.

This defeat would have been even more one-sided if not for the convincing performance of Unam captain Adrian Coetzee who won both his singles and doubles matches. In the other matches CTC B beat CTC C 17-3. The police team had a bye and will join the competition on the 4th of October.

The next inter-club matches will be played on 4 October. Tennis fans are invited to watch some of these matches which promise to bring some “Davis Cup” atmosphere to the local tennis courts.
