Smokey to fight on 05 July

WINDHOEK: Namibian boxer Joseph ‘Smokey’ Hilongwa is eager to step back into the ring after a year of inactivity in order to plough back into the sport.

Hilongwa is set to fight on 05 July against Raul Eliseo Medina of Argentina here in the bantamweight category – a different weight category than the super-flyweight category he used to fight in.

His last fight in that weight category was in April last year when he defeated South Africa’s Sibusiso ‘The Brave Heart’ Twani on points to win the World Boxing Federation (WBF)’s International Super- Flyweight title at the Windhoek Country Club and Resort.

Hilongwa told a media briefing here on Wednesday that the upcoming fight is aimed at raising funds to acquire a plot for his Warriors’ Promotions boxing stable’s developmental programmes.

“We found a plot in Goreangab residential area, which we would like to develop for our boxing gym, public fitness gym and a hall which we can rent out for events,” he stated, adding that the price for the land is N.dollars 160 000.

Such infrastructure will help with the development of his academy’s boxers and other Namibian boxers in general, he added.

Also on 05 July, Namibia’s Abraham Ndaendapo will take on Ghanaian Herbert Quartey for the International Boxing Federation (IBF)’s Continental Africa Super-Featherweight title.

Six other undercard fights are scheduled for the night.

All foreign opponents are expected to arrive in Namibia on Tuesday next week.

Tickets for the fights are on sale for N.dollars 150 (ordinary seats), N.dollars 300 (ring-side seats) and a table for 10 people goes for N.dollars 10 000.
