SUN CITY: Namibian midfielder Hendrik Somaeb has been ruled out of the Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup underway in South Africa.

The senior national footballer aggravated a hamstring injury he had been nursing ahead of the Cosafa Cup, which commenced on Sunday.

Speaking to Nampa on Monday before the team’s training session, coach Ricardo Mannetti said Somaeb will thus not be illegible for selection for the rest of the tournament.

“The injury did not start today; this is something he has been nursing for a long time, and during yesterday’s game he re-injured himself. He now needs time to recover fully,” said the coach.

Somaeb picked up the injury while playing for his club, Free State Stars in South Africa.

Mannetti could not say which player will replace Somaeb ahead of the team’s next game against Mauritius on Tuesday at 18h00 Namibian time.

Namibia drew 0-0 in its opening game of the tournament against Seychelles at the Moruleng Stadium in the North-West Province of South Africa on Sunday.

Namibia is level on one point with Seychelles.

Zimbabwe is currently leading Group A with three points after defeating Mauritius 2-0 on Sunday at the same venue.
