Stars beat Citizens to extend lead atop NPL

WINDHOEK: Namibia Premier League (NPL) log leader, African Stars Football Club (FC) beat Citizens FC at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday to extend their lead on the top to nine points.

Africa Stars went into the game six points ahead of Orlando Pirates who currently occupies second spot on the Premier League log standing.

Stars’ Engelhart Kahua scored the only goal of the match in the 44th minute of the game to make the half-time score 1-0.

In the second half, Stars again came out the stronger side in the first 25 minutes of the second half but Citizens picked up momentum as they later had more of the ball possession in the last 15 minutes of the game.

The game ended 1-0 in favour of African Stars.

The win now puts Stars on 32 points and nine points away from second placed Orlando Pirates who are levelled on points with Tura Magic after 14 games.

Speaking to the media after the game, Stars coach Woody Jacobs, said it is still early in the season to decide who will win the league, even though his team leads the log stands by nine points.

He was however pleased with his team’s win after a month without football.

“Tomorrow we will have a tough game because we have to rotate players after a few hours of rest, and winning today is a good start to the year we are now looking forward to extending our lead tomorrow when we take on civics even though it will not be an easy game,” said Jacobs.

Citizens coach George Ochurub said African Stars deserved to win the game because they were the better side.

“I don’t want to make excuses but today I did not have all my players available to use as four of them were out on suspension with yellow cards. But on the other side Stars should be given credit for the brilliants game they played today, we are now looking forward to our Sunday game with Tura Magic,” said Ochurub.

In other games played on Saturday in Windhoek, Tura Magic, drew 0-0 against Civics at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, while at the Independence Stadium Walvis Bay based Eleven Arrows shocked Orlando Pirates with a 1-0 defeat.

Another coastal side Blue Water lost their game 1-0 to Otjiwarongo based Mighty Gunners at the same venue.
