Stars Go Top After Victory Over Tigers

A goal two minutes from time by substitute Elvis Tjivasera gave African Stars a priceless 2-1 victory over Tigers on Tuesday, that saw them replacing Black Africa at the top of the log.

In a scintillating match of non-stop action, Stars took the lead through Edwin Korukuve on 66m, but Absalom Imbondi equalised for Tigers on 79m.

Stars threw everything into the attack in the final stages and the lanky Tjivasera scored the winner on 88m, when he rose high to head home a corner kick by Riaan Cloete.

The result puts Stars level with Black Africa on 42 points but they go top for the first time this season, due to a better goal aggregate.

There were not many chances of note in a tight first half that was played out mostly in the middle of the park.

For Stars, midfielder Jamu Ngatjizeko came close when he shot over the bar after a goal mouth scramble, while Edwin Korukuve shot wide from a Bradley Wermann cross on 38m.

For Tigers, Protash Kabwe was a constant threat with his pressure on Stars’ defence, and just before the break he headed narrowly wide from a cross by Absalom Imbondi.

Stars stepped up the tempo in the second half with Cloete, Korukuve and Meraai Swartbooi leading their attacks, but Tigers remained dangerous on the counterattack.

Swartbooi went narrowly wide with a long range effort on 60m, while Absalom Imbondi shot wide after a Tigers counterattack three minutes later.

Stars finally got the breakthrough when Korukuve volleyed home Freedom Puriza’s pin-point cross into the box.

Tigers however fought back and equalised when Imbondi tucked away Kabwe’s cross 13m later.

Stars however had the final say when Tjivasera headed home Cloete’s corner kick with two minutes remaining.
