Stars Held By Blue Waters

African Stars fell behind the leaders in the MTC Premiership title race when they were held to a goalless draw by Blue Waters at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium on Sunday.

In a hard, physical match, Stars had a goal disallowed for offside, but other than that few chances were created as the teams battled it out for a draw.

The result leaves Stars in fourth place, seven points behind the log leaders Tigers and Black Africa, while Blue Waters are seventh on the log.

Stars took the game to Blue Waters, but seldom threatened as Blue Waters’ defencve, which was well marshalled by Gottlieb Nakuta, kept them at bay.

Stars’ midfielder Johannes Seibeb came the closest to scoring when he had a cracking shot tipped for a corner by Jealous Mutelo, who did well to save another effort by Seibeb, after fine interplay between Heinrich Kazerua and Riaan Cloete.

Stars’ coach Woody Jacobs brought Bradley Wermann and Ikuaterua Tjozongoro on in the second half and the pacey Tjozongoro had a call for a penalty turned down when he went down in the box.

Stars thought they had the winner midway through the second half when Kazerua scored from a quick counterattack by Tjozongoro, but the goal was disallowed for offside, much to the dismay of Wermann who picked up a yellow card for his vehement protestations with a linesman.

In the closing stages, Wermann had a freekick tipped over the wall by the impressive Mutelo, who also saved well from a Meraai Swartbooi shot.

In an earlier match at the Independence Stadium, Civics beat Blue Boys 2-0, with two second half goals by Erwin Afrikaner and Nico Narib.

In an uneventful first half, Civics came closest to scoring when Llewellyn Stanley had a shot cleared off the line by Emil Dorgeloh.

Blue Boys’ defence was finally breached in the 79th minute when Erwin Afrikaner ran onto a Steven Gariseb through pass to put the ball into the net.

Civics keeper Edward Maova pulled off a great save from Abed Namukwambi, and Civics had the final say when Nico Narib scored with seven minutes to go after a quick counter attack by Erwin Afrikaner.

Civics are now sixth on the log on 24 points while Blue Boys are 10th on 15 points.
