Stars Retain Biest Namibia Cup After Penalty Shootout

African Stars beat Citizens 3-2 on penalties to lift the Biest Namibia Cup for the second year in a row on Saturday.

Chances were few and far between and when the sides were still deadlocked at 0-0 after extra time, the match had to be determined on penalties.

In a dramatic penalty shootout, Citizens took the lead when their keeper Immanuel Immanuel saved Freedom Puriza’s shot, but Stars immediately drew level when Rino Tjitemisa’s shot went wide.

When Citizens captain Charles Uirab blasted his shot over the bar, Stars were 3-2 ahead, but their celebrations were put on hold when captain Pat Uanivi’s shot hit the crossbar.

Stars’ keeper Max Mbaeva however saved Henry Somseb’s shot to ensure a 3-2 victory for Stars and send their fans wild with delight.

It was a dramatic end to a tight, but uneventful match of few chances.

Citizens did most of the attacking in the first half but they couldn’t finish their chances off. Captain Robert Uirab had a free kick comfortably saved, while a shoot by Deon Kibit was also comfortably saved.

For Stars, Heinrich Kazerua headed wide from a Freedom Puriza cross, while Ferdinand Karongee headed over the bar from a corner.

Stars stepped up the tempo in the second half and launched relentless attacks.

With Freedom Puriza and Edwin Korukuve putting in numerous crosses from the flanks, Citizens’ defence was stretched to its limit, with McBride Ndjavera, Bradley Wermann and substitute Johannes Seibeb all coming close to scoring.

Citizens however defended admirably and the match went into extra time.

Stars finally found the net when Elvis Tjivaseta scored from a Ninja Karongee cross but it was disallowed for offside.

Stars did most of the attacking in the final quarter with Puriza, Ndjavera, Tjivasera and Korukuve all coming close, but they could not break the deadlock and the match had to be decided on penalties.

Stars received N$550 000 for winning the trophy, while Citizens received N$220 000 as the runners up.

Citizens’ defender Tjiwana Tjinotjiua won the man of the match award.
