Stars Win NPL Crown

Bradley Wermann scored a hat trick as African Stars thrashed Rebels 4-0 to be crowned MTC Namibia Premiership champions at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Sunday.

Needing only a point to ensure that they reclaim the title they last won four years ago, Stars showed no ill effects from yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to Tigers and instead were in rampant form with returning talisman Wermann scoring thrice and Zambian import Godwin Jenna also getting on the score sheet.

“I told you yesterday that we would be champions. I told you before that that we would be champions and we managed that,” an elated and drenched African Stars coach Nicholas ‘Woody’ Jacobs told reporters after earning his first league success as a coach.

“It’s hard work that paid off. Throughout the season we’ve been consistent. We’ve been winning games that people were not giving us a chance… telling us that our team is an old age home with so many experience players that we have. But I think that was the key factor leading us to this title and I’m just elated and at a loss for words,” he added.

On the balance of play, there was only ever going to be one outcome and that was a victory for Stars, who were hardly troubled by a demoralised Rebels side already mulling a return to first division football.

Having bossed the match from the onset, Stars grabbed a deserved lead through Wermann when he bundled home from close range on 15 minutes. The lively forward poached his second five minutes into the second half and rounded off his hat trick, from a free kick 20 meters from goal, when Rebels keeper failed to deal with the swerving effort.

Jenna then rounded off the scoring with a low drive from close range as Stars captured the title in style.
