Student allegedly strangles newborn baby to death

WINDHOEK; A 21-year-old female student was arrested by the Oshana Police at the Ongwediva Vocational Centre (VTC) over the weekend after she allegedly strangled her newborn baby to death shortly after birth.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson Sergeant Slogan Matheus told journalists at the weekly crime briefing here on Sunday the student gave birth to a healthy baby girl at an unknown time on Friday. She then allegedly strangled the baby by tying leggings around her neck. She dumped the baby’s body in a dustbin.

The student has been admitted to the Oshakati State Hospital under strict police guard.

Police investigations are now underway to establish the exact circumstances that led to her allegedly killing the baby.

Meanwhile, the police at Ongwediva reported that Penipawa Simon died at Omahahi village in the Ongwediva area on Saturday after he fell from a tree while collecting wood.

The 47-year-old Simon died on the spot after he fell from the tree at about 12h00.

His next of kin have been informed and police investigations are underway.
