Student drowns at Swakopmund beach

SWAKOPMUND: A 16-year-old boy is suspected to have drowned at the Swakopmund Beach, also known as the Mole on Tuesday.

His body is not yet retrieved, but the Swakopmund Sea Rescue team has already started the search for the missing body.

Crime Investigations Coordinator for the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, confirmed the incident on Wednesday.

Kashuupulwa noted that the incident took place at around 15h30 and that the boy was a student at Coastal High School.

The deputy commissioner said the deceased and five male friends were playing along the shore, when a strong wave swept them into the water.

“I understand they were not swimming but it happen that a strong wave got hold of him and he is suspected to have drowned,” she said.

Kashuupulwa said the next of kin is informed, but the police will only release the deceased’s name once the body is recovered.

“If the body is not retrieved soon, chances are that it will resurface within three days,” said Kashuupulwa.
