Student Dumped Baby to Avoid Eviction

A STUDENT at the Ongwediva Vocational Training Centre, who was arrested after she allegedly dumped her new born baby in a dustbin at the hostel over the weekend, is suspected to have committed the crime out of fear of being evicted from the institution.

Sources at the centre told The Namibian that the 21-year-old suspect feared being evicted from the centre in accordance with the rules.

The police confirmed that the suspect is believed to have given birth to a baby boy during the early hours of Saturday at the centre’s hostel, before she strangled the baby and then dumped the body in the dustbin.

The gruesome discovery was made by the hostel caretaker, who traced the blood from the toilet to the suspect’s room and then to the dustbin.

The suspect is a first-year clothing production student at the centre.

According to some students who preferred to remain anonymous, no one knew that she was expecting as she never showed any obvious signs of pregnancy and always isolated herself.

“We did not know that she was pregnant because she never bathed or undressed in front of us. She was always alone,” said the students.

The suspect is currently receiving treatment at Oshakati hospital and remains under police guard.

Efforts to get comment from the Oshana police public relations officer were unsuccessful.
