Supermarket Burns Down At Grootfontein

Grootfontein mayor Emma Taukuheke told Nampa that the fire destroyed the entire shop, adding that the blaze was detected between 3h30 and 4h00.

“We still don’t know where the fire came from or what started it. All I can say is that everything in the supermarket was destroyed, including the new stock in the storeroom,” said Taukuheke.

She said officials of the municipality’s fire brigade did their best to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby shops and the adjacent First National Bank (FNB) complex.

Otjozondjupa police spokesperson Maureen Mbeha said a case of arson was opened by the shop’s general manager, Sheila Yvonne Grundelling.

Mbeha said the police’s preliminary findings indicate that the fire started in the storeroom at about 4h00, and its cause is still unknown.

Nothing could be salvaged from the shop even after the fire was extinguished by midday.

The loss is estimated at about N$12 million.

The shop belongs to 65-year-old Daniel de Jesus, a resident of Grootfontein.
