Suspect in ‘Moffie’ Murder Denied Bail

Jonas Angula, 35, the man who allegedly savagely battered a suspected ‘moffie’ to death in Gobabis was denied bail on Tuesday.

Angula, who was arrested for the alleged murder on Saturday of a man he accused of being gay, was denied bail in the Gobabis Magistrate’s Court.

Omaheke Regional Crime Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Chris Kalimbula informed New Era on Tuesday that Angula and his girlfriend lived together in the same house. On Saturday he found Johannes Goagoseb, 35, sitting outside the house.

Angula allegedly started beating Goagoseb with his fists and then took a knife and chased after his girlfriend who sought refuge at her sister’s house.

When Angula came back, he allegedly found Goagoseb and started beating him with a ‘waterpas’ – a level – a measuring instrument used on building sites, on the head until the victim lost consciousness and was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries

The matter was remanded to 22 October for further investigations and to enable him to get the services of a lawyer considering the gravity of the case.

Sergeant Slogan Matheus, from the police’s public relations department informed the media at the weekly briefing on Sunday that the suspect, also 35, found his girlfriend with the deceased at a house in Damara Block, Freedom Square in Epako township on Saturday evening around 19h00 after earlier attending a memorial service.

The suspect allegedly asked his girlfriend what she was doing with a ‘moffie’, after which he allegedly beat her with clenched fists before he took a knife and chased after her up to her sister’s house.

The suspect then came back and started beating the ‘gay’ man with the level all over the body, after which the victim collapsed.

The victim was taken to the Gobabis State Hospital for medical attention, but died from his injuries.
