Suspect Pleads Guilty to Murder

AROAB resident Willem Fredie Eksteen (18), who is accused of strangling his lover to death, yesterday pleaded guilty to the charge of murder.

He made a first appearnce in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court.

Eksteen is accused of having murdered his lover Janeta Babieb (18) at farm Warmfontein in the Aroab district early on Monday morning.

Eksteen during yesterday’s court hearing pleaded guilty without giving an explanation following a confession to murder before a magistrate on Tuesday.

But, before he had confessed the murder, Eksteen allegedly claimed to the police that Babieb committed suicide by hanging herself with a rope from the roof.

Eksteen, after murdering Babieb, allegedly tried to take his own life by hanging himself with the same rope he had used to strangle Babieb. However, the suicide attempt failed.

At yesterday’s court hearing scars were visible on Eksteen’s neck.

Eksteen was denied bail, and will return to court on 13 October.

Babieb has become the fourth woman murdered in the space of two months in Karas region.

Recently, the body of Bonaventura Jash was found in the dry river bed at Tses village after she was raped before being strangled to death.

A suspect identified as Jesaya Boois was arrested in connection with Jash’s death.

In August, Dophistar Mwaka Chinyama (24) was reportedly strangled to death by her 28-year-old boyfriend in her room at Aussenkehr in the Karasburg district, while Katrina Waterboer was allegedly beaten to death by her lover.
