Teacher Charged in Absentia for Daughter’s Death

THE teacher from Ongwediva, who allegedly killed her 26-year-old handicapped daughter and burned her body, was on Monday charged with the murder in absentia.

Shekupe Hildegard Iyambo (48) allegedly killed her daughter, Magdalena Nunyango Amunyoko, whose body was found burnt on the braai stand behind the family home in Ongwediva on Saturday.

Iyambo, a teacher at Shapwa Combined School, was admitted to Oshakati Intermediate Hospital’s psychiatric ward after her arrest on Saturday. Oshakati magistrate Abel Simataa Sankwasa, who heard the case, denied Iyambo bail and postponed the case to 19 May.

Police said Iyambo could not appear in person because she is in a state of confusion. According to witnesses and neighbours, Iyambo is suspected to have been hacked Amunyoko to death with a panga before burning her body.

The gruesome murder is believed to have occurred at around 18h00 on Friday and the body was discovered at about 10h00 on Saturday by one of the suspect’s sons, who then alerted the police. Iyambo had three children, two boys and the late Amunyoko. Police investigations into the matter are continuing, while Amunyoko was laid to rest at Okakukaumbi-Okando in Omusati Region yesterday.
