Teen Punches Classmate to Death, Attempts Suicide

A GRADE 8 Friedrich Awaseb Senior Secondary School pupil at Grootfontein tried to commit suicide in police cells a day after he was arrested for allegedly punching a classmate to death on Friday morning.

The teenager, who was arrested on the same day in the evening, was restrained from killing himself by other inmates.

Grootfontein hospital sources told The Namibian that the teenager was brought in for treatment with a bruised neck.

Although Otjozondjupa police spokesperson Sergeant Maureen Mbeha could not confirm the attempted suicide, she however confirmed the arrest of a suspect on Friday evening on allegations of punching 15-year-old Stephanus Haimbili Salvester to death during a fight at the school.

Mbeha said the boys fought just before they sat for an English examination. She quoted a teacher at the school who told the police that the fight broke out after the pupils had been asked to remove books from the tables while waiting for the examination to start.

“The teacher just saw the other pupil (the deceased) being punched and he then fell on his back,” Mbeha said, adding that Salvester was then rushed to the Grootfontein State Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

She also said the suspect was released on warning and is expected to appear in the Grootfontein Magistrate’s Court today.

In another incident, 38-year-old man from Aroab, about 160km east of Keetmanshoop, died after he was stabbed with a broken bottle once in the neck during an argument.

Police spokesperson Edwin Kanguatjivi said Piet Abrosius Rooi was stabbed on Saturday at 21h00 at Club Desert Stream where the deceased and the accused were drinking.

“It is further alleged that the accused then broke a bottle and stabbed the victim once in the neck,” he said.

Kanguatjivi said the victim was rushed to Aroab Clinic were he was pronounced dead on arrival. His next of kin have been informed.
