The Dogg, Erna Chimu come out tops at NAMAs

SWAKOPMUND: Local artists Gazza and Erna Chimu were named Best Male and Female Artist of the Year respectively at the fourth Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) held in Swakopmund on Saturday.

The 2014 NAMAs comprised two events held at the new indoor sports centre in Swakopmund – one on Friday night, where 17 awards were handed out in recognition of some Namibians’ efforts to promote and contribute to the local music industry; and the main event on Saturday night.

Friday evening’s show also saw local jazz musician Chimu bag two awards for Best Traditional for ‘Hai-Serute’ and Best Instrumental for ‘Hi Tilite’.

Gazza, real name Lazarus Shiimi, won the award for Best Music Video for ‘Kwateni Omnona’.

A special NAMA went to Martin Morocky, better known as The Dogg, in a new category introduced at this year’s awards. The Dogg also won the Song of the Year (for ‘Nuka’) and Best House (Nuka).

The event was kept alive by contemporary performances from the Equipped Dance Academy which was incorporated into the live stage performances in various music genres.

Kwaito artist Exit scooped awards for Most Popular Artist of the Year and Kwaito Artist of the Year, while Castro won the best live performance category.

The Best R&B category was won by Floritha for her song ‘Don’t Judge’, while N.I.A snatched the award for Best Rap And Hip-Hop with the song ‘More Love’.

Best Album of the Year went to Elvis Se Seun for ‘Boere Rock’, while Best Damara Punch was awarded to Lettie for the song ‘Khorixas’. Kallefa Tjiriange walked away with the Best Oviritje award for ‘Onguae’ and Tunakie with Best Shambo for her song ‘Ondjila’.

Jean-Michael was awarded with the Best Newcomer of the Year award for ‘Rise and Shine’.

Best Kizomba went to Blossom for her song ‘Indikupapatele’, and the duo Vanity won Best Afro Pop inclusive of township disco for their song ‘Tuli Mo Hole’, while the Best Group or Duo award went to acapella group VM6.

Lady May was awarded with the Best Soukous/Kwasa award for her song ‘We Do It This Way’.
