Thieves target Gobabis Municipality

GOBABIS; The offices of the Gobabis Municipality were broken into over the weekend, with the finance department’s offices being the main target of the burglary.

The burglary was discovered on Monday morning as staff members of the municipality reported to work.

The break-in also extended to the building of the nearby located Uakii Wilderness – a tourism business – as the thieves broke into the restaurant on the premises.

They however only got away with menial items such as a kettle and some utensils. The main office at the establishment was not targeted.

Although staff at the municipality were still verifying possible lost items during the break-in, the Manager for Human Resources and Corporate Services at the Municipality, Frieda Shimakeleni, told Nampa no major office equipment was stolen.

“We are still in the process of checking our files to determine what is missing. Once we have done that, we might have an idea of what the thieves were after,” she said.

The break-in appears to have targeted certain documents kept in either the finances or human resources offices, as these offices were ransacked by the suspected thieves who left the documents in piles.

The payroll office, where the records of payments of staff is kept and the human resources office which amongst others contains confidential copies of minutes of disciplinary hearings of some staff members whom the municipality have lodged cases against, were amongst those targeted.

None of the office furniture, computers and other vital office equipment was stolen, leading municipal staff to believe that it was a targeted and planned incident.

A case of burglary was lodged with the Namibian Police on Monday.
