Three drown in Omusati Region

WINDHOEK: Three people drowned in the Etaka Dam in the Omusati Region’s Onesi Constituency on Saturday afternoon.

Namibia Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson Inspector Stephan Nuuyi told members of the media here on Monday during the weekly crime briefing that the bodies of a man, his girlfriend and a child who was related to the woman were found floating in the water at Etaka in the Epalela area.

Nuuyi said it was reported that the three went out in a canoe to fish on Friday at around 17h00.

“It is suspected that the canoe capsized, which led to them drowning,” he said.

The deceased have been identified as Passeko Kathelandu, 48; Lahya Ekandjo, 46; and Shanyenge Taleni, who was two years and seven months old.

Their next of kin have been informed and police investigations into the matter continue.

Also in the Omusati Region, an 11-year-old boy died after a donkey cart he was travelling in hit a tree and overturned.

He was accompanied by two other boys who escaped the accident unharmed.

“The two allegedly tried to retrieve their friend from under the cart and hitch-hike to the hospital, but it was too late,” Nuuyi said.

The deceased’s next of kin have been informed.

Meanwhile, a 55-year-old man was allegedly found dead in his room by his girlfriend on Saturday evening.

According to Nuuyi, the deceased complained of chest pains and had been coughing the previous day.

He has been identified as Kashana Shivute, and his next of kin have been informed.

In an unrelated case, also in the Omusati Region, a 76-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl.

It is alleged that the suspect entered the victim’s room, overpowered her and raped her at around midnight on Saturday.

The incident occurred at Olwiili village in the Okalongo Constituency.

Police investigations into the matter continue.
