Three Killed in Easter Road Crashes

THREE people were killed and 103 injured in road accidents during the Easter holiday this year compared to nine who died last year during the same period.

In a press statement yesterday Motor Vehicle Accident Fund of Namibia spokesperson Kapena Tjombonde said the deceased were all female passengers aged 15, 17 and 36 while of those injured, 47 were aged between 16 and 35 years.

Tjombonde said there were 53 crashes, of which 17 were roll-overs and five head-on collisions. She also said that 27 of the vehicles were pick-ups, 24 sedans and seven buses.

“The number of crashes increased by 13% and injuries went up by 2%,” said Tjombonde.

Khomas Region recorded the highest accidents with 21 Erongo had nine while Omusati and Otjozondjupa recorded six and five respectively. A total of 16 crashes occurred on Thursday last week, 13 on Saturday and four on Sunday.

Tjombonde said 47% of the accidents occurred between 14h00 and 22h00.
