Three Records at Gala Five

Three records were established at the final Bank Windhoek Longh Course Gala of the season which took place at the Olympia Pool over the weekend.

In the Girls 12 and Under category, Joanne Liebenberg and Heleni Stergiadis both smashed the 800m freestyle record of 10:57,71 that was established by Zanre Oberholzer in 2011.

Liebenberg won in a time of 10:31,08, while Stergiadis came second in 10:45,36. Since Liebenberg is not a Namibian, her time is a new NASU record but not national record. Stergiadis however set the new national record with her time.

In the Women’s Open category, Daniela Lindemeier took a hundredth of a second off her own 200m breaststroke record with a new time of 2:37,18.

A total of 77 swimmers participated in 562 events at the gala which brings the local long course season to a close.

The next gala will take place on 24, 25 May 2014 at Dolphins Swimming Pool and will be the first Short Course Gala of the year.

Meanwhile, 21 swimmers from Namibia are currently participating in the SA Level One Regional Age Group Gala in Germiston, while eight of Namibia’s elite swimmers will participate in the South African National Championships from 7 to 12 April.
