Tigers, Ba, Stars in Wide-Open Title Race

There were no significant surprises when the MTC Premiership resumed last weekend with all three serious title contenders Tigers, Black Africa and African Stars collecting maximum points against lowly opponents to keep the title race wide open.

Tigers maintained their grip on the summit with a hard fought 2-1 triumph over Civics at the Sam Nujoma Stadium under the floodlights on Friday, with Nafatalie Petrus and skillful striker Benson Shilongo on target for Ingweinyama, while Llewelyn Stanley replied for the luckless Civilians. Joint leaders Black Africa kept their aspirations for an unprecedented consecutive 4th league title alive, dispatching LHU Blue Waters by a solitary goal in the 2nd of a double header at the Kuisebmund Stadium in Walvis Bay on Saturday. Defensive midfielder Denzil Haoseb’s 2nd half strike separated the two teams in a match that was largely dominated by the wasteful visitors.

In the curtain raiser, visiting Ramblers continued in great form when the resurgent Tunschell Street Boys netted two unanswered goals to see off relegation candidates Eleven Arrows. Rammies returned to what has become their happy hunting grounds in buoyant mood – exactly a week after they beat Blue Waters at the same venue with an identical score line. A goal apiece by Clemence Awiteb and Kennedy Ihuhua did the trick for the visitors. Stars were the biggest winners in round 14, mauling relegation certainties Rundu Chiefs by 5 goals without a reply in a one-sided MTC Premiership encounter at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday.

Burly striker Gazza Kazeurua, helped himself to a rare hat trick, while diminutive winger Meraai Swartbooi and Boetietjie Seibeb returned the compliment with a goal apiece. In yesterday’s action, United Stars eased their relegation worries with a comprehensive 3-0 win over fellow league rookies PC Blue Boys at the Rundu Sports Stadium. United’s danger man Alfeus Ngwezi netted a goal in as many games sandwiched by Edison Kauanivi’s well taken brace to complete the rout for Dawid Snewe’s outfit.
