Tigers End Trophy Drought

Tigers claimed the final instalment of the Biest Namibia Cup title when they defeated Orlando Pirates 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday.

The hard-fought victory ended a 16 year wait for silverware for the oldest football club in the country.

However they were made to sweat for their success as a gutsy Pirates side proved to be worthy opponents in a relatively evenly contested encounter.

Tigers shaded the first half in goalscoring attempts and took an early lead when lanky striker Fillemon Nambele scored after just ten minutes.

But Pirates drew level on 30 minutes after Brendan Goagoseb converted from the penalty spot.

The goal galvanised Pirates, who saw more of the football and confidently knocked it around and denied their rivals the time to settle into a rhythm when they gained possession.

After the break, Tigers regained control of the match but Nambele and co fluffed several chances to give their side the initiative.

Again Pirates roared back, with top scorer Nicky Musambani leading the charge. The poacher tested Tigers’ goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua from distance with two well struck efforts late in the second half but the agile goal-minder comfortably dealt with the threat.

Musambani, substitute forward Marcello Haraseb and tricky winger Henrico Hoebeb carried Pirates threat into extra time as they troubled Tigers defence with their darting runs and intricate passing.

At the other end, Nambele, midfielders Letu Shatimuene, Protash Kabwe and Absalom Iimbondi linked up well but their hard work was undone by a combination of dogged last ditch defending from Pirates and poor decision making on the part of the attackers.

With neither side able to find the winning goal, the match had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out.

Pirates skipper Volten van Staden missed the first spot kick when he shot tamely straight at Kazapua, while Shatimuene scored Tigers’ first to hand his side the aantage.

The next five kickers were all successful before Kazapua again came up trumps by saving from Haraseb to send his side into wild celebrations.
