Toddlers dies in shack fire at Tsumeb

WINDHOEK: A one-year-and-five-month old baby also burned to death in a shack at Saamstaan in Tsumeb on Saturday morning.

The baby identified as Mariano Christiano was allegedly left sleeping in the shack by his mother when a candle suspected to have been left burning caused the fire at about 02h00.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Inspector Slogan Matheus told a media briefing here on Sunday that the mother of the baby allegedly went to a bar to look for her boyfriend.

The deceased’s next of kin has been informed.

A member of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) also burned to death in his bedroom at his home in Omuthiya in the Oshikoto region.

The incident took place on Sunday at about 00h25 at the Kaniita Location.

NamPol’s Spokesperson Inspector Slogan Matheus told a media briefing here on Sunday that the deceased identified as Aron Nana Naanda, 24, was a constable at the Omuthiya Police Station.

He said the deceased was off duty when the incident occurred and is alleged to have been at home with his girlfriend who managed to escape unharmed.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and police investigations continue.
