Town of Arandis will host one-day rapid chess tournament tomorrow

WINDHOEK: The town of Arandis in the Erongo Region will host a one-day rapid chess tournament tomorrow.

The venue is the Arandis Community Development Centre, with the country’s leading players expected to grace the event, and all other chess lovers are invited to participate.

It is the first time the Namibia Chess Federation (NCF) organise a chess tournament outside the capital this year.

NCF chairperson Otto Nakapunda said in a media statement yesterday they made the decision to take chess to the regions, and no region deserves its own tournament more than the Erongo Region, adding that chess is highly appreciated in that area.

He said Arandis, in particular the Kollin Foundation Secondary School there, has produced a number of gold medallists in the junior chess rankings as well as school championships over the years.

Nakapunda said that depending on the success of the Arandis Open, they will beef up the NCF calendar next year with more out-of-Windhoek tourneys.
