Truck driver dies in collision near Grootfontein

OTJIWARONGO: A truck driver died instantly after the truck he was driving was involved in a side-collision with a pick-up opposite the John Pandeni Agricultural Research Station in the Grootfontein District on Thursday.

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Otjozondjupa Regional Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Maureen Mbeha told Nampa in an interview on Friday the truck driver has been identified as Eddy Malesky, 43.

“The accident occurred approximately 17 kilometres towards Grootfontein from the direction of Otavi on the B8 road,” Mbeha said.

It is alleged that the truck collided into the side of the oncoming pick-up before rolling once, killing Malesky on the spot.

His next of kin have been informed.

The Otjozondjupa police spokesperson indicated that the truck belongs to the André van der Walt Transport Company in Swakopmund in the Erongo Region.

It was transporting fish protein powder products to Lusaka, Zambia from the Namibian coastal town.

Both drivers were alone in their vehicles.

The 71-year-old driver of the pick-up, Wolfgang Kruger escaped the accident with minor injuries.

Police investigations continue.
