Tyson’s fight against Pacquiao will not be side-stepped: Nestor

WINDHOEK: Boxing promoter Nestor Tobias says he is confident that Bethuel ‘Tyson’ Uushona will go up against Manny Pacquiao as the Filipino boxer’s mandatory challenger for the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) welterweight title.

Some confusion has set in after Mike Alvarado and Juan Marquez over the weekend fought for the WBO title eliminator, which decides who goes up against the current champion – in this case Pacquiao.

It was reported on skysports.com on Sunday that Marquez, who has won titles in four weight classes, is expected to now fight Pacquiao in what would be their fifth bout.

Uushona, who is ranked number one in the world in the welterweight category, has however been declared the mandatory challenger for the title by the WBO.

In a statement released by the MTC Nestor Sunshine Boxing and Fitness Academy on Monday, the academy’s owner and manager Tobias said they are confused because knowing the rules of boxing, the mandatory challenger must be given an opportunity to fight the current champion and it is not up to the champion to decide. He added that the WBO must ensure that its rules are adhered to.

“This will not be the first time boxing faces such a situation. I recall similar situations where the WBO has put its foot down and ordered champions to adhere to fighting the mandatory challengers. Wladimir Klitschko is one example who just defended his title against the mandatory challenger Alex Leapai. Champ Berman Stivvern was also recently ordered to fight current number one Deontay Wilder before he can think of a unification bout against Klitschko,” stated Tobias.

He added that they are also aware of other boxers who have been stripped of their titles because they refused to honour their fights against the current number one contenders, adding that such examples “are endless”.

“No promoter should be allowed to rewrite the rules of boxing. In this regard we are confident that the WBO will not allow its integrity and principles of fairness to be compromised by this particular incident, and that Pacquiao will be ordered to fight Tyson as per the rules of boxing,” Tobias stated.

Uushona is now rated number one in the WBO welterweight division and has an impressive record of 34 fights, 31 wins, 2 loses and one draw.
