UPDATE: Police fire teargas to disperse crowd in Katima Mulilo

KATIMA MULILO: Special Field Force (SFF) officers fired teargas into the crowd of people blocking the Katima Mulilo Municipality gates where they are staging a protest over land on Monday.

The crowd is demanding to speak to Katima Mulilo Municipality Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Charles Nawa and chased away Katima Mulilo Mayor, Charles Matengu, who wanted to “talk” with them.

An unidentified female protestor told Nampa that they have been waiting for years to buy plots from the town council but no response has ever been received to acknowledge their applications.

“We are fed-up with waiting and today we seek answers on why Nawa is delaying to approve our requests,” she fumed.

The teargas was fired at about 13h00.

Unconfirmed reports from some members of the public have it that a pregnant woman suffered minor knee injuries when she fell to the ground while attempting to escape the teargas.

Further allegations indicate that one unidentified man was assaulted by law-enforcement officers, who pulled him away from the crowd and abandoned him at the old Misika Open Market.

At 14h00, the SFF officers remain at the town council offices.

The council offices remain closed.
