Vekuii Rukoro coronated as Paramount Chief of OvaHerero community

OKAHANDJA: Advocate Vekuii Rukoro was yesterday officially coronated as Paramount Chief of the OvaHerero community.

OvaHerero holly fire traditional commander, Abisai Mungendje led the ceremony at the Okahandja Commando number one in the Otjozondjupa Region.

The 61-year-old Rukoro succeeds late Chief Kuaima Riruako, who died in Windhoek on 02 June 2014 after a short illness at the age of 79.

Rukoro was unanimously elected by various traditional councillors under the OvaHerero Traditional Council at Ehungiro in the Otjinene constituency, as the rightful successor of Chief Riruako in September 2014.

He follows in the footsteps of other chiefs and figures of Namibia’s colonial history, like Hosea Kutako and Samuel Maharero.

After Rukoro accepted his chieftaincy position on Saturday, he walked around waving his right hand proudly to greet the general public who gathered at Okahandja.

Rukoro promised to fight for the socio-economic improvement of all OvaHerero people in Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, United States of America (USA) and United Kingdom (UK).
