Viljoen and Esterhuizen Are Champs Again

Bowls aces Diana Viljoen and Will Esterhuizen underlined their class when they took the top honours at this year’s edition of the “Champion of Champions” tournament on Monday.

The playing class formed part of the Namibian Nationals which are currently underway in Windhoek and saw all top single players going head-to-head in a knock-out competition.

It was Viljoen’s third victory in a row at this prestigious event, while her national team mate Esterhuizen claimed his fourth title running.

Viljoen, who plays for Rossmund Bowling Club (RBC) in Swakopmund, came up against Erna Muller (Windhoek Bowling Club) in the final.

Although Muller put up a brave fight, it was not enough to see off the reigning champion, with the game eventually ending 21-4 in favour of Viljoen.

In the men’s final, Esterhuizen, a member of the TransNamib Bowling Club (TNBC) had to deal with Corny Stam from Tsumeb Bowling Club (TBC) who had displayed some fine bowling throughout the competition.

After an even start, Esterhuizen started to gain momentum and increased his lead continually, to win the match 21-10.

Meanwhile Esterhuizen will have a chance to win another gold medal when he and his partner Axel Krahenbuhl take on the father-son pair of Douw and Jurie Calitz in the doubles final this Saturday. The Calitz family had triumphed at the same event last year and it will be interesting to see if they can repeat their victory against two of Namibia’s top current players.

In the woman’s final Muller will have the chance to redeem herself when she and her team mate Heleen Rust come up against Bea Lambrech and Renette de Kock.
