Walk Away While You Can

Loide Jason I HAVE been a community reporter since I joined the media world but this week was the first time I attended a court session at the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court. I had decided to acquaint myself with what goes on in the courts.

Lo and behold: There stood a 38-year-old man in the dock for taking away his daughter’s innocence through rape, which turned into a pregnancy. What a shame!

Seriously, how dare you rape and impregnate the fruit of your own loins. These are the fathers who are slipshod about their children. Who do these young children turn to when they are troubled, considering their fathers are raping them?

This barbaric behaviour among men forces one to conclude that some men are evil. There are too many disturbing media reports lately of evil deeds committed by men.

The latest horrific incident is that of a 29-year-old man who stabbed his 24-year-old girlfriend to death before committing suicide.

Murder cases are still escalating barely a month after President Hifikepunye Pohamba called for a national prayer day early in March. According to some media reports six women lost their lives at the expense of their partners after the prayer day while one woman is battling for survival.

This is so thwarting – it seems prayers fell on deaf ears or Namibians are ignorant of the problem. When are we going to stop these disquieting crimes especially that of murdering women?

Seriously this will make one to stay single because nowadays women are not allowed to either reject a man or end a relationship with them because they will be killed.

Men, who do you think you are to encroach women in your “cells” of abuse? Who do you think you are to stop women from walking away from abusive relationships?

The past few months should be a wake-up call for every Namibian woman. Say NO to abuse and walk away while you still can. We are the mothers of the nation and we deserve respect from all men.
