Wanderers Thrash Suburbs in Rugby Derby

Hosts FNB Wanderers delivered a blistering performance to successfully retain the annual FNB Derby Trophy, hammering stable mates FNB Western Suburbs 35-6 at the Wanderers sports field on Saturday.

Having last clashed in 2012 for the inaugural edition of the annual FNB sponsored derby, narrowly won by the White Stallions (Wanderers) by 16 points to 13, Saturday’s action saw the hosts according the visitors very little hospitality if any. Wanderers dominated the proceedings and dictated the pace of the match all the way to victory. Winger Johan Tromp scored the opening try for the home team but the celebrations were short-lived as the fired-up Khomasdalers responded with two quick penalties via the boot of Justin Nel, giving Suburbs a slender 6-5 lead going into the changeover.

The second half saw the Tunschel Street Boys, storming back gly in search of restoring their lead and seized momentum with four more tries via Riaan van Zyl (two), Theo Coetzee and Handre Bezuidenhout to put the hosts in the driving seat 25-6.

Heading into the final quarter, Tromp was again back in the thick of things when he added a penalty while Mahco Prinsloo dispatched another penalty coupled with two well-taken conversions to hand the White Stallions a well-deserved 35-6 victory.
