”We are just a goal away from qualifying”: Mannetti

WINDHOEK: Namibia senior national team coach Ricardo Mannetti is confident of his side going through to the next round of the Council of Southern African Football Association (Cosafa) Cup.

Namibia will play Zimbabwe in their last game of the group stages on Thursday. The match is scheduled for 16h00 Namibian time (GMT +1).

Zimbabwe is currently top of the group with six points after defeating Mauritius 2-0 in their opening game of the competition on Sunday and beating Seychelles 1-0 on Tuesday.

Namibia is second in the group with four points after drawing its first game 0-0 with Seychelles and then winning against Mauritius.

For Namibia to go through to the next round of the competition it has to beat Zimbabwe in their last game of Group A.

Speaking to Nampa on Wednesday Mannetti said there is still a lot of work that needs to be done with the team, but he is confident the team will go through and meet Zambia in the quarter finals.

“We are just a goal away from reaching the next round of the Cosafa cup, I know Zimbabwe is playing attacking football just like us, but we are creating more scoring chances then them and anything can happen when we get into the field tomorrow,” said Mannetti.

He added that Namibia has an advantage of going through or even scoring more goals as Zimbabwe might play a more open game.

“Zimbabwe is having a lot of fans at the stadium that they have to please. I expect them to play an open game tomorrow and also attack us because they would like to prove a point as a dominant team in the group.

Right now it’s just one goal separating us from the three they have scored so far, and come tomorrow they will go into the game with the aim of scoring more goals to please their fans and then that might just play to our advantage as it will open up the game,” he stated.
