Welwitschias lose again in Vodacom Cup

REPLACE ‘defense’ with ‘defence’ IN FIFTH PARA.

WINDHOEK: The Namibian senior national rugby team suffered yet another defeat in the 2015 Vodacom Cup at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium on Friday.

They lost 7-45 to the Falcons, also known by their Afrikaans name ‘Valke’, from South Africa.

The Namibian Welwitschias have now lost five out of six matches played in the competition so far.

Valke scored their opening try of the game in the fourth minute and before halftime, scored five more tries of which they converted five, taking the halftime score to 40-0.

The Welwitschias scored their only try of the game in the 41st minute through Johan Tromp. Michael Kaizemi converted successfully.

From then on all their attacks were effortless, as they failed to break down a resilient Valke defence.

Valke finished off the game with a try in the 67th minute but failed to convert.

Speaking to the media after the game Welwitschias’ Man of the Match, Rezando Botes, said the team started the game very slow in the first half but improved on their mistakes in the second half.

“We have a very youthful team that is very good and we will now have to work on building this squad, because despite the defeat in the Vodacom Cup, we improve every time we go onto the field with our opponents. Credit should also be given to the supporters for always coming out in numbers to support the team,” said Botes.

Valke captain Jean Pierre (JP) Mostert said he was happy with the friendly reception his side received from the Namibian supporters and the point collected for winning the match, even though they wanted more.

The Welwitschias’ final match of the Vodacom Cup will be against the Leopards in Round Seven of the competition on 08 May 2015 at the same stadium.

Namibia is using the Vodacom Cup as preparation for its participation in the Rugby World Cup, which takes place in the United Kingdom in September this year.
