Westphalia Beat Gladiators At Swakopmund

Westphalia beat Namibia’s Brave Gladiators 2-1 in Swakopmund on Sunday to draw level at 1-1 in their three-match series.

Namibia won the first encounter 1-0 in Windhoek after a goal by Zenatha Coleman, but at the coast the Germans were quick to settle and defender Frederike Kempe opened the scoring with a powerful shot from about 25 metres out, giving Brave Gladiators goalkeeper Susana Eises no chance in goal.

The Gladiators pushed for an equaliser in the second half and when it arrived it was rather fortuitous. The evergreen Zenatha Coleman went on a dazzling run through the Westphalia defence and past goalkeeper Carina Schluter and although her goal-bound shot was cleared off the line, it deflected off Namibia’s Westphalia-based winger Thomalina Adams into the net.

Westphalia however struck back midway through the second half when Jennifer Stenbruck took a tame shot from the edge of the box which Eises seemed to have covered, but the ball bizarrely flew onto the upright and into the back of the net.

Gladiators coach Jacqueline Shipanga replaced Eises with Lydia Eixas, while another Westphalia-based player Vewe Kotjipati also came on for Stacey Naris and Anna Shikusho replaced Twelikondjela Amukoto.

Coleman was always a thorn in the flesh of the Westphalia defence and also had a brilliant shot hit the bottom of the upright, and bounced clear.

The two sides now get back to Windhoek for the grand finale as they meet again on Wednesday, 23 April to settle the series.
