Windhoek Police Cameras Dysfunctional

Police sources have revealed surveillance cameras and the electric fence at the Windhoek Police Station are dysfunctional and have so far resulted in the escape of two detainees.

Trial-awaiting detainees are aware of the situation and have taken aantage of it to plot their escape.

Khomas regional commander, Major-General Desiderius Shilunga, last Friday claimed ignorance over the situation. “I don’t know about that,” Shilunga said curtly, when approached for comment.

One of the detainees, 29-year-old Muveipi Patriot Andima, allegedly escaped from the Windhoek Police Station on March 18 while in custody on a charge of robbery and theft of a motor vehicle. He was arrested a day later at Oshikango sources informed New Era. As a result of his alleged escape, he was transferred to the Katutura Police Station and appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on March 24 on a charge of escaping from lawful custody.

“I understand and will conduct my own defence, I will plead guilty but I need time before I plead,” he informed the court. The matter was remanded to April 16 for pleading. Magistrate Jermaine Muchali presided.
