Windhoek to host remaining round six and seven NPL games

WINDHOEK; The remaining round six and seven games of the Namibia Premier League (NPL) will be played in the capital over the weekend.

With the NPL now having 16 teams, with nine of them Windhoek-based, home games for the teams have to be played over two weekends as there are not enough football stadiums in the city to host the Premier League games.

Last week, Windhoek-based Tigers, Black Africa, Orlando Pirates, Unam and Rebels played their home games at the Sam Nujoma and Independence stadiums against teams from Tsumeb, Otavi and Otjiwarongo.

This weekend will see African Stars, Civics, Citizens and Tura Magic grace the field against visiting teams from Walvis Bay and Rundu.

Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, NPL league administrator Tovey Hoebeb said they decided to play the games over two weekends because one weekend alone cannot accommodate nine Windhoek teams.

“If we were to play all the games over one weekend, then we would not be doing the game of football any justice because that will mean we have to play games from morning until evening,” explained Hoebeb.

He added that playing round six and seven over two weekends is at the moment the best solution the league has for the nine Windhoek-based teams.

“We don’t have a lot of infrastructure, but we are trying our level best to use what we currently have to serve all the teams.

Playing like this will also allow us to finish the league in time, which is really the best for travelling teams financially,” Hoebeb stated.

The fixtures for the weekend’s NPL action are as follows:

Civics vs United Stars, 15h30 at Sam Nujoma Stadium

Citizens vs Julinho Sporting, 18h00 at Sam Nujoma Stadium

African Stars vs Blue Water, 15h30 at Independence Stadium
