Windhoek West Constituency by-election kicks off

WINDHOEK: The Windhoek West Constituency by-election kicked off at 07h00 today, and by 08h00 more than 10 people have voted at each of the four polling stations visited.

Voting is taking place at 13 fixed polling stations and eight mobile polling stations.

When Nampa visited polling stations at the Windhoek Vocational Training Centre (VTC), Rocky Crest High School, Baines Shopping Centre and Academia Checkers, many Namibian residents were queuing up to cast their votes before they go to their places of work.

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN)’s returning officer for the Windhoek-West by-election John Jantjies told Nampa today that they expect the turnout to increase later in the day.

The provisional voters’ roll indicated that a 27 106 eligible voters residing in that constituency are expected to participate.

The ruling Swapo-Party, Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP), DTA of Namibia, Congress of Democrats (CoD) and Republican Party are the only political parties participating in the by-election.

Candidates for the councillor position are George Trepper (Swapo), Maureen Dunn (RDP), Immanuel Benestes Auchamub (DTA), Joseph Amadhila (CoD) and Sophia Panizza (Republican Party).

Voters are making use of the electronic voting machines (EVMs), which have already been used in by-elections in Ohangwena and Endola, and the Bukalo Local Authority election earlier this year.
