Wits Refuse to Release Botes for Cosafa Cup

The Brave Warriors will be without the services of veteran striker Henrico Botes after his club Biest Wits refused to release him for the Cosafa Cup tournament which starts on 17 May in the North West Province of South Africa.

Brave Warriors coach Ricardo Mannetti said he is disappointed that the club is refusing to release the player.

“They are saying it’s not a Fifa date and so they are not going to release him. But they have nothing to play for so I don’t understand. I will now have to call up a replacement on Tuesday. I can’t fault the player but we have lost a quality player and an in-form striker. It’s not easy to replace him but it opens a door for another player. Otherwise the team is in a good mood and looking forward to the opening game against the Seychelles,” Mannetti said.

Another player that will miss the first game will be Botswana-based Benson Shilongo.

“He will only be released after our first game since their last league game is also on 17 May – we respect that and will wait for him,” he said.

The team has been based at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria and will depart for Moruleng, North West on Friday. The South African-based players, except for Botes, will join the camp as of Monday night following the completion of their domestic leagues over the past weekend.
