Woman Accused of Killing Cousin’s Baby

OMUSATI police arrested a 23-year-old Okahao woman on Tuesday in connection with the murder of her cousin’s baby.

Police spokesperson deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi confirmed this and said the suspect was supposed to appear in court yesterday. It was, however, later discovered that she had given a false name to the police.

Kanguatjivi said the woman is, instead, expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court today.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly murdered one-year-old David ya David at the Okadhiya Koshumba Village in the Elim Constituency early on Tuesday. Kanguatjivi also said the suspect approached David’s mother on Monday evening at a cuca shop in the village and asked to carry the child. She then disappeared with him.

“The following day baby David’s mother reported him missing at the Okahao Police Station and the search for him started,” Kanguatjivi said.

He added that some villagers told the police that they had seen the suspect with the baby on Tuesday morning. “The police questioned her about David’s whereabouts and she later allegedly confessed and showed the police where she had dumped the baby’s body,” Kanguatjivi said. He said the body was found hidden in a thorny bush on Tuesday afternoon and the police suspect that she strangled him with the straps of a baby carrier (Omakwi godhikwa).

Kanguatjivi said the motive for the murder is not known. Police investigations are continuing.
