Woman Dies After Falling Off Vehicle

Police in Oshikoto Region are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a woman, Helena Heitha (26) from Oshivelo fell from the bonnet of her husband’s Toyota bakkie and broke her ribs on Friday night.

Oshikoto Region crime coordinator Deputy Commissioner Naomi Katjiua said the couple were quarrelling and the husband jumped into his bakkie to drive off, and the woman jumped onto the bonnet of the vehicle, falling in the process.

The husband identified as Pineas Heitha (35) was arrested by the Oshivelo police and his wife was taken to the Oshivelo Health Clinic from where she was transferred to the Tsumeb District Hospital. She was later transferred to the Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital where she died on Sunday morning.

Deputy Commissioner Katjiua said police have also found out that Heitha, who is an employee of the Ministry of Health and Social Services at the Oshivelo Clinic, does not have a driver’s licence and was charged with a case of reckless driving without a license on Friday night after the accident.

Now that his wife has died, Katjiua said, Heitha, who appeared in the Tsumeb Magistrate’s Court yesterday will be charged for culpable homicide.

Some people at Oshivelo told The Namibian that Heitha ran over his wife deliberately after a quarrel.

However Deputy Commissioner Katjiua said that those allegations are not true.

She said the victim jumped on the bonnet of the bakkie probably to stop her husband from driving away.

Katjiua said police are still investigating.
