Woman Dies in Blaze, 18 Shacks Destroyed

EIGHTEEN shacks in Walvis Bay’s Kuisebmund residential area were destroyed by a fire, and a 49-year-old woman lost her life in the blaze on Sunday night.

The incident took place at around 21h00 along Sandwich Street.

Detective inspector Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Walvis Bay confirmed yesterday that Laimi Iyambo burnt to death in the shack fire, which later spread to 17 other structures nearby.

Police said the fire also spread to another house, where a room was burnt.

“All 18 structures were destroyed, and we are still investigating the cause of the fire. At the moment, we are also not sure how many properties were destroyed or saved,” the detective noted.

In a separate incident in Swakopmund, 27-year-old Steven Eixab died of a stab wound on the neck at a house in the Mondesa residential area.

The incident took place on Saturday evening at around 18h00 when an unidentified suspect allegedly stabbed the deceased once on the right side of his neck.

Eixab died on the spot.

Iikuyu said the duo shared a room, and when they returned from a shebeen that evening, they started arguing about something. Later, the suspect took a knife and stabbed the deceased.

“The suspect has not been arrested as he is on the run. However, his identity is known to the police and we are searching for him,” the detective stated.
