Woman Drowns After Shebeen Visit

SHORTLY after collecting her monthly State pension, an elderly woman (79) paid a shebeen a visit – only for her lifeless body to be found floating in a river later.

Confirming the death, deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, a police spokesperson, yesterday said the incident took place on Monday in the Bagani village in the Kavango East region at an unknown time. “The deceased pensioner left her homestead for a drink shortly after receiving her pension and never returned home.” The woman was identified as Muthiramo Bernedette Nyepo.

It is suspected that she had drowned, Kanguatjivi said yesterday. A post-mortem to determine the cause of her death is underway, he added.

In the same region on the same day, a building under construction by Chinese builders collapsed and “fell down to pieces”.

Kanguatjivi told The Namibian that the building crashed into an adjacent corrugated iron shack where four people had been sleeping.

The tragedy took place at about 22h00 on Monday. One of the people in the corrugated iron structure was killed instantly, while two others are being treated in a Rundu hospital after being injured in the incident. Their condition was described as stable, Kanguatjivi said.

The fourth person only sustained minor injuries and has already been discharged from hospital.

By late yesterday afternoon, the deceased could only be identified as Evalistus.

His next of kin have been informed about his death.
