Worker Dies After 20m Fall

A worker of Grinaker LTA, a company Vedanta Skorpion Zinc mine in the south contracted to do maintenance work, has died following an estimated 20-metre fall.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon.

Sources at the mine indicated that the worker identified as Lukas Shikongo (40) fell off a ladder fitted on a storage tank whilst performing routine maintenance work at the mine’s refinery plant. It is alleged that the ladder buckled while Shikongo was climbing off it, causing him to fall down.

Shikongo apparently died on the spot.

“He died on the spot, but since paramedics who were first on the scene could not pronounce him dead, he was only pronounced dead at Sadadi clinic,” the source said, adding that operations at the mine were suspended shortly after the fatal incident.

The inspector of mines was expected at Rosh Pinah yesterday to investigate the cause of the fatal incident.

Vedanta Skorpion Zinc corporate manager Nora Ndopu yesterday confirmed the death of the worker whilst he was performing maintenance work at the mine, adding that all operations within the affected area have been stopped.

Ndopu said both the police and inspector of mines have been notified and an investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.

Extending condolences on behalf of the management and employees to the family, colleagues and friends of the deceased, Ndopu said the company is providing the necessary support to the family and colleagues who have been affected by the tragedy.

Ndopu stressed that safety at the mine is first priority and that the company will strive to achieve zero harm within its operations.
