Young Man Shoots Self in the Leg With Father’s Gun

A 21-YEAR-OLD man from Walvis Bay in the Erongo region has a bullet stuck in the leg after he accidentally shot himself with a pistol he stole from his father.

He allegedly stole his father’s gun from a safe in the house and went out with it in his pant’s pocket.

The incident took place at Independence Beach in Walvis Bay, between 01h00 and 02h00 on 1 January 2015. Prime Investigations Coordinator for the Walvis Bay police deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa said the victim was transferred to Windhoek last week Friday for the bullet to be extracted.

“He was apparently running with his friends with the gun in the pocket, he then decided to remove it but it accidentally went off. The bullet hit him in the area between the foot and knee,” said Kashuupulwa.

Kashuupulwa indicated that the name of the young man could not be revealed, as he is not yet charged. His father is still to give his statement on how the son got hold of the key to the gun safe.

She noted that there is a possibility that the father will be charged with negligence in the handling of a firearm.

The son might be charged with possession of firearm without a license and discharging a firearm in a municipal area.

“All these will be determined after we obtain statements from the father and son,” said Kashuupulwa. In another incident at Uis settlement, Kashuupulwa reported that a 67-year-old man is charged with illegal possession of firearms for keeping an unlicensed Kalashnikov (AK-47), a shotgun and an Uzi automatic rifle. A police random search operation discovered the weapons in the suspect’s possession on 1 January 2015.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Magistrate’s court at Omaruru today.
