22-year-old man arrested and charged with culpable homicide and driving a motor vehicle without a driver’s licence

A 22-year-old man arrested and charged with culpable homicide and driving a motor vehicle without a driver's licence, was today denied bail in the Rundu Magistrate's Court.

Moses Yoni appeared before Magistrate Hellen Olaiya, who denied bail due to the seriousness of the offence as well as for his own safety, as well as to allow for further police investigations.

Olaiya explained to the accused his rights to acquire private legal representation, a State-funded lawyer through the Department of Legal Aid, or to conduct his own defence, with the accused opting for the latter. She then postponed the matter to 19 December 2019.

Prosecutor Helvi Gorases appeared for the State and Immanuel Mukonda was the interpreter.

Moses was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly ran over two boys on a bicycle at Sikanduko informal settlement along the Trans Caprivi Highway, killing both on the spot.

The accused is remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
