A Minister said no Namibian student in China has been infected by or contracted the coronavirus

International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said no Namibian student in China has been infected by or contracted the coronavirus.

Nandi-Ndaitwah who is also the Deputy Prime Minister said in a media statement availed to Nampa today that the Namibian Embassy in Beijing is working closely and constantly monitoring the situation of the current 500 Namibians studying in China, of which 27 live in Wuhan, Hubei Province.

The embassy, together with the provisional government is in contact with students and movement outside the university campus are still restricted for all those residing on the campuses of various institutions as per measures taken by Chinese authorities, she said.

These measures, she explained apply to all regardless of nationality and are enforced in light of the fact that face masks are not easily available due to high demand.

Namibia appreciates the assistance provided by university authorities in Hubei for providing students with facemasks and food at their doorsteps, the minister said.

Nandi-Ndaitwah's statement comes after local and international media reports that Namibian students in China were desperate to be evacuated.

By today, the novel coronavirus has infected more than 69 000 people globally, mostly in mainland China, and the death toll was 1 669.
